Should You Repair or Replace Your Boiler?
Here is what to consider when deciding whether to repair or replace your existing boiler, as well as cost thresholds and reliability factors to consider.
When Repair Makes Sense
Targeted component replacement- Boiler Age: Your boiler unit is under 15 years old and has generally been reliable and if you've kept up with regular servicing and maintenace.
- Single Component Failure: faults are isolated to a standard serviceable component in your system (such as a thermistor, zone valve, or pressure relief valve) with parts readily in stock.
- Low Repair Ratio: The estimated quote for repair of your boiler is under 50% of the cost of a replacement.
- Breakdown History: Your boiler has suffered fewer than 2 breakdowns, needing repair, in the past 12 months.
When Replacement Is Advisable
Long-term efficiency & reliability- Older Systems: Your existing boiler is over 15 years old.
- Obsolete Parts: Key manufacturer replacement components (e.g. main heat exchanger, proprietary PCB) are obsolete or difficult to source for your system.
- Major Expense: The repair estimate comes in at around £500 or more to get your boiler running again.
- Recurring Issues: Your boiler unit has required multiple repairs, often fails to fire correctly or it frequently shuts off and is unreliable.
- Winter is Approaching: The last thing you want over a cold winter period is a boiler that is prone to failure. A new efficient, capable and reliable system will help you enjoy the colder seasons.

Boiler Symptom & Diagnostic Guide
Common boiler breakdown symptoms, potential mechanical causes, and how our Gas Safe engineers isolate the fault.
Why has my hot water stopped but the heating still works?
Hot water failure usually means a motorised valve that diverts hot water between your taps and radiators is stuck or broken. The internal water temperature sensor may also have failed. You can check your boiler pressure gauge, making sure it is between 1 to 1.5 bar. When we arrive, we will test the diverter valve and internal sensors, isolate the mechanical fault, and replace the worn part.
Why is my hot water fine but the radiators are cold?
Cold radiators typically mean there is a stuck diverter valve, a faulty room thermostat or a failing central heating pump. First, ensure that your wall thermostat is set higher than the current room temperature and it has fresh batteries and no connection issues. During our visit, we will test your heating controls, check water circulation to your radiators, and free or replace the faulty valve.
My combi gives me no hot water at all — what's wrong?
The boiler is not detecting when you turn on a hot tap, usually due to a worn internal flow sensor, low system water pressure, or mineral accumulation. You can check the water pressure gauge on the front of your boiler; if it is below 1 bar, top it up. Upon arrival, we will test water flow detection and repair or replace the faulty component.
My boiler has power but won't fire up. What does that mean?
If your boiler has electrical supply, but an internal safety check or ignition issue is stopping the burner from lighting. Check to make sure the external electrical switch has not been knocked off and check your timer clock settings. When we attend, we will test the internal electronics, fan, and ignition sequence to pinpoint and fix the fault.
What does it mean if my boiler is showing a fault code?
A fault code or lockout means your boiler detected an issue like low water pressure, overheating, or a burner problem and has shut down safely. Note down the code, then check your pressure gauge and try pressing the reset button once. When we visit, we will diagnose the exact fault behind the code, test the system and resolve the underlying cause.
